Will Play Equipment Damage Artificial Grass?

Artificial grass is becoming increasingly popular among Alberta homeowners, thanks to its durability and ease of care. If you have young children, you may be wondering whether synthetic turf is a suitable option for your home, especially if you plan on adding play equipment for your kids. The short answer is that, yes, an artificial grass can absolutely accommodate play structures, trampolines, and other large toys. Here's what you need to know to make it work for you.  Call us today for a consultation!

How Play Equipment Impacts Artificial Grass

Play structures generally tend to be on the heavier side, so they can compress your turf over time. In most cases, this isn't anything you need to be worried about, as a thorough brushing can restore fluffiness and loft. Even for play equipment that might shift a bit during use, like a trampoline, you won't have an issue unless the edges of the base are rough or sharp.

The only time you might have a problem with play equipment damaging your turf would be for structures that need to be bolted into the ground. In this case, you would be better off installing the play equipment prior to adding the artificial grass so that it can be put in around the base of the play structure, rather than underneath it. This way, your play equipment will be secure, and there will be no risk to  your turf.

Protecting Your Turf from Play Equipment

If you are concerned about sharp or rough edges around the base of the equipment, you can easily add a base layer in between the play structure and your  artificial grass for added protection. A simple rubber or woven floor mat should do the trick, providing a protective barrier to minimize the risk of rips or tears in the turf.

Restoring Your Synthetic Lawn after Removing Play Structures

As your kids get older, you may decide that you no longer wish to keep pieces of play equipment. Once you remove them, you may notice that some areas of  your artificial grass are looking a bit flat and lifeless. To bring your turf back to its former glory, simply go over the area with a turf rake or broom, brushing against the grain of the grass blades. This will encourage them to stand back up again, bringing back that lush, vibrant appearance you love so much.
