One of the greatest things about synthetic turf is that it does not require the extensive care that a natural lawn does. With artificial grass, there is no need to water, the costs of which can seriously add up over time. The same goes for fertilizer. Best of all, you won't need to mow your synthetic turf, which can save you a lot of time and hassle over the years, not to mention the cost of a lawnmower or gardening service.

However, just because turf doesn't require the high level of care of a natural lawn doesn't mean that there is no maintenance needed. You will have to care for synthetic lawn over the years to keep it looking its best and prevent damage, but it is much more low maintenance. Here's an overview of what you'll need to do.

Keep the Surface of the Turf Clean

Over time, debris can accumulate on your turf. Things like fallen leaves, small rocks, dead insects and more can get caught in the blades. If you don't clear away debris regularly, it can make its way down into the infill. Not only can this inhibit the infill's ability to do its job of supporting your turf, but it can also lead to damage to the turf itself. Sweep away any solid debris as needed.

For liquids, like pet waste or spilled beverages, rinse your artificial grass with a hose and allow to dry completely. This will prevent the liquids from leaving sticky patches in your lawn or causing discoloration of the fibres.

Care for the Blades

You'll also need to rake and brush the surface of your artificial turf about once every month or so to prevent matting or flattening of the blades. In addition to keeping the blades standing tall, raking will also get into the top layer of the infill to keep it from getting compacted over time, which can reduce its efficacy.

After raking, brush the top layer of the blades without getting into the infill. This will smooth out the top of the infill while keeping the blades lush and full. You can spot-treat any flat areas with the brush as needed in between full brushings to keep everything looking even.

Maintain the Infill

Finally, you'll need to care for the infill to prevent compacting and maintain drainage capabilities. Aeration with a rotating tool is the best way to accomplish this. You likely won't need to aerate your infill for the first year or so, but after that, aim to do this task two to three times per year for the best results.
